En 1964, le groupe International Publishing Corporation lance The Sun , en remplacement du Daily Herald , quotidien des syndicats et du Parti travailliste britannique. Mais il ne parvient pas à s’imposer sur le marché: il est alors vendu en 1969 à Rupert Murdoch, président du groupe News International. Avec le changement de propriétaire, le quotidien va complètement modifier sa formule et son orientation pour devenir, en quelques années, le premier quotidien populaire britannique. De format tabloïd, il est imprimé sur sept colonnes, consacrant à l’illustration plus de 25 p. 100 de sa surface rédactionnelle. Il traite essentiellement de faits divers et des aspects sensationnels de l’actualité, exploitant le sexe, le sang et la violence; il consacre également beaucoup de place au sport: 32 p. 100 de sa surface rédactionnelle, l’actualité politique nationale et internationale en représentant moins de 8 p. 100. Il tire actuellement à près de 5 millions d’exemplaires, 4 700 000 en 1994 contre 1 million exemplaires en 1968. Le supplément dominical, News of the World (qui remonte à 1843), a une diffusion aujourd’hui égale à celle du Sun . Ces deux titres sont les plus prospères du groupe de Rupert Murdoch, qui est le premier groupe de presse quotidienne britannique, propriétaire également du Times , devant le groupe Mirror.
